Salad days are coming! The sun is shining and the days are finally starting to lengthen. The shift in seasons feels palpable in the shop today, and our fridges are filled up with beautiful lettuces and salad leaves to freshen your plates and welcome spring’s much-anticipated arrival.
The Univert Co-operative in Provence have a particularly wonderful selection of lettuces at the moment. Red and green batavias, oakleaf and delicate butterheads are all looking exceptional, with really beautiful quality on these across the board.
We also have a stunning salad leaf mix from Kindling Market Garden in Stockport. There are some lovely big red mustard leaves in the mix at the moment (giant red and red dragon), bringing a gentle mustardy, horseradish-like kick, balanced by crisp and frizzy endives, as well as softer, juicy green purslane leaves to round everything out.
And finally, some wonderful early tunnel-grown spring onion bunches from Organic Pantry in Tadcaster. Fresh, generous bunches and a very welcome addition to salad bowls this week. We’ll be making the most of them while they’re around!
