Autumn feels like it’s creeping up on us, and it’s about time we highlighted the Bourjassotte fig.
Fig trees from the Mediterranean have been written about since Ancient Greek times. From there, figs gradually made their way north into France, where they became an established part of the country’s cuisine. Although it’s possible to grow figs further north, the trees really thrive in the warmth and sunshine of the Mediterranean region.
Our figs are freshly picked in the Pyrénées-Orientales, a mountainous region in the south of France. The fruits are beautiful this season, mostly harvested small, but they certainly don’t lack flavour. Sweet with a hint of vanilla, they’re delicious eaten on their own, as part of a dessert or added to a salad.
