Unicorn is owned and managed by its 50 or so co-op members. We work with a relatively flat management structure and all members are ‘managers’ of the business, taking on equal responsibility for the running of the business as well as staffing the shop floor. In addition, we also employ a small pool of casual & contracted shop workers to support co-op members on the shop floor. Casual and contracted workers are paid 80% of co-op members’ hourly rate, or the Living Wage Foundation’s ‘Real Living Wage’, whichever is higher.
Casual work at Unicorn involves tasks such as packing dried foodstuffs in our production area, serving customers at the till and re-filling shelves on the shop floor, as well as some cleaning tasks at the end of the day. Some of the work is fairly repetitive, and involves some heavy lifting.
It is suitable for people looking for some flexibility in when they work, and who may have commitments elsewhere. It is not suitable for people needing regular, guaranteed hours, as shifts are not guaranteed.
Casual workers are paid 80% of co-op members’ hourly rate, or the Living Wage Foundation’s ‘Real Living Wage‘, whichever is higher. Currently we pay casuals £13.20/hour.
Unfortunately we are only able to offer casual employment for a maximum of 12 months. During this time, we are under no obligation to offer shifts, and you’re not obliged to accept shifts offered.
We accept applications for casual work on a rolling basis – you can apply any time. Have a look at our application pack and see if it might suit you. Completed applications can be sent to recruitment@unicorn-grocery.coop.
As an integral part of our commitment to creating an inclusive and diverse work environment, Unicorn strongly encourages applications from all potential candidates regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, age, sex, ability or gender identity. We recognise the many benefits of a diverse workforce and put inclusivity at the core of our values as a business
