Feel free to change this recipe at will, you won't go far wrong! Maybe try a vanilla pod, a few cardamom pods, or a grate of nutmeg in the mix. Or maybe a small bit of ginger, a bay leaf, apples or satsumas. Perhaps a splash of ginger wine or sloe gin before serving?
- 1 Bottle Red Wine
- 2-3 Cloves
- 1 Cinnamon Stick
- 1 Star Anise
- 6 Allspice Berries
- Citrus e.g. orange sliced thinly (include skin) & chopped peel of lemon
- Sweetener to taste e.g. rice/agave syrup
- Put a small amount of wine or orange juice in a pan (enough to cover spices), add sweetener & citrus, bring to the boil then gently simmer for 5 min. Add rest of wine, warm through on a low heat. The flavours of the spices get stronger the longer the wine mulls. Enjoy!
