The UK berry season has started with a flourish this year! Our first shipment of produce arrived yesterday morning from Martin and Rachel Soble at Whitethorn Farm in Herefordshire.
Whitethorn Farm has been growing organically on the banks of the River Wye for 20 years, and this years fruit is exceptional.
This week’s berry lineup has redcurrants, blackberries, gooseberries and the short seasoned star of the show: cherries.
Last year was a bad year for cherries with failed crops due to the weather, but this season has brought us huge fruits, which are tasting incredible. They’ve a rich, deep flavour and are juicy, tart and sweet all at the same time – they won’t last long!
We will be using a mix of the other berries to create a sensational Summer Fruits pudding with a loaf of Handmade Bakery’s Sleepless White.
With UK berry growers in decline due to rising costs and increasing competition from imports, we’re lucky to be able to buy direct from this fabulous farm.
