This week’s veg news is all about avocados, which are especially rich, creamy and delicious right now. They’ve become a firm favourite with our veg buyers, who seem to be eating them on repeat for lunch. Usually just smashed onto sourdough with a squeeze of lemon, a pinch of salt and pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil to finish.
Our avocados are currently coming from Spain, where they’re at their seasonal peak. Recent rainy weather has made picking more challenging for growers, but the high humidity means the fruit is ripening quickly, so they’re arriving in the shop almost perfectly ready to eat.
Hass avocados are the most popular variety, thanks to their higher fat content, which gives them that rich, buttery texture. Look out for one with deep purply-black skin and a gentle give when squeezed. A subtle buttery aroma around the stem is a good sign too. If the stem peels away easily, it’s usually ready to enjoy.
