It is approaching peak season for Figs and their quality and flavour this week is exceptional.
We mainly look to France for our figs. On our shelves today we’ve the variety ‘Col de Senora’ known for its long slender neck and rich and jammy texture. This weekend we will be stocking the ‘Bourjassotte’, more squat in shape with a berry-like sweetness.
The Bourjassotte we are buying are grown in the Pyrenees Orientales, a region located in the South of France. They are now experiencing the perfect weather conditions for the crop with hot days for ripening being followed by colder nights which prevents the fruits from splitting.
Our grower Michel Fabre works on a 7 hectares of tree and is proud to say he’s got the oldest fig tree in France, a 40 year old beauty which is still producing fruits to this day. His family farm only specialises in figs, which enable him to focus on providing the best conditions for producing his delicious fruit.
We love them for their versatility, as happy atop a bowl of cereal as they are gently roasted and tossed into a salad of bitter leaves.
