As temperatures drop our supply of Lincolnshire lettuces ended last week. It’s time for us to go further afield looking across the Channel to supplement our salad offer.
Located south of the Rhone valley in Provence, UniVert’s offer definitely helps soften the blow of the end of the UK lettuce season.
Formed in 1991, the co-operative has allowed isolated growers to sell via a more direct route to their customers. This form of direct trade cuts out the middleman and means we receive these products as close to harvest as possible.
This week in our fridge, we will have the gorgeous oakleaf in red and green, some giant butterhead that have a bit more texture, and plenty of green batavia. All lovely with a simple vinaigrette, you could also make it more colourful, throwing in some super crunchy radish, also courtesy of UniVert.
On the sweet side, we have some beautiful Feijoa. If you have never tasted them, they are a must-try in their short season. Some countries call them pineapple – guava due to their unique, almost indescribable flavour. Ready to eat when you feel a bit of a give, the adventurous will eat the skin, but you can just eat with a spoon like a kiwi!
