A fresh, crisp spring salad sort of veg news to kick us off after the bank holiday!
We’re delighted that Duncan from Lyncroft Farm in Ormskirk has started picking his first Lancashire-grown midi cucumbers of the year. Just the right size for snacking or salads, they’re crisp, refreshing, and bursting with flavour.
Pam from Strawberry Fields has now started on her field lettuces, so we’ve got a wider range of varieties available – red and green oakleaf, batavias, and her ever-popular little gems. Pam consistently grows exceptional quality lettuces year in, year out – perfect for lots more sunny salads. We’ll have plenty in stock this week.
We’re also welcoming back more of Pam’s herbs – aromatic oregano, lovage, and flat-leaf parsley join her tarragon and thyme this week. If you’ve never tried lovage (also known as sea parsley), its leaves and stems add an intense, celery-like flavour to salads, soups, stews, and stocks.
And finally, a new grower joins us this week via our lovely local wholesalers, Organic North. They’re supplying us with luscious spring onions from Mora Farm in Cornwall, now that Pam’s have finished, along with vibrant, peppery radishes from James Foskett in Suffolk.
Radishes are perfect for adding a dash of colour and crunch to your salad, for snacking raw (try dipping them in a little salted Naturli butter), or why not quick-pickle them in vinegar with a dash of sweetener for 30 minutes or so – perfect as a fresh, crunchy side or a tasty filling for sushi, kimbap and summer rolls.
