Our UK fruit range is looking and tasting lush at the moment. The early spring and summer warm weather has certainly helped sweeten up our selection of top-tree fruit.
Martin at Carey Organics in Herefordshire provides us with our summer splash of delights. Look out for their growing range of plum varieties. Opal plums are recognisable by their dusky red colour and juicy straw yellow fresh. It is a free-stone plum, meaning the stone falls away easily from the flesh and is proving to be a staff favourite. We also have the dual-purpose Heron variety. As well as being a delicious dessert plum, it is a highly reliable cooker. Sautéeing them will elevate the flavour or simply roast with a dash of maple syrup and cinnamon.
On some other trees, the “Exceptional weather has brought on the apples for the earliest harvest we can remember,” Martin told us. As usual, we begin the apple season with the Discovery variety. They are small to medium in size but pack a punch with flavour and juiciness. Their flavour is sweet and tangy and can sometimes be compared to that of strawberries. Look for the pink bleed as you bite into one!
