Squash season is here!
We have had great squash growing weather this year with warm night temperatures bringing these on at a rapid rate.
This week from our squash grower extraordinaries Strawberry Fields we’ve got Custard, Crookneck, Turban, Harlequin, Spaghetti and Tromboncino squash in stock, and look out for their red kuri pumpkins next week.
The team at Strawberry Fields spaghetti squash did so well last year that we only had a eight week gap between the old crop and the new. Long enough for you squash lovers to miss them though! As usual we recommend shredding the stringy flesh like spaghetti and covering in a delicious sauce.
Crooknecks are a slightly firmer summer squash lending itself well to a light roasting in some salty olive oil dressing or hollowing out and stuffing, and have a nutty, rich and mildly peppery flavour with a moist pumpkin-like texture.
Custard squash, with their distinctive scalloped saucer-like shape, have a fresher, lighter, more delicate and creamy courgette-like flavour.
And finally the most photographed vegetable in unicorn, famous on summer shoppers instagram stories, the Tromboncino. An Italian Heirloom variety this can also be left to toughen up and mature like a winter squash, but we love eating it in its summer state when its flesh is like a firmer, denser and seedless courgette.
For the gardeners amongst you this does exceptionally well trained up an arch or a trellis and so can be a fun squash for a manchester ‘yarden’. Enjoy!
